OSHA safety protocols on a Summa jobsite

Safety & Compliance

Safety is the first thing we think about — always. Every person on site, every process, and every decision is designed to protect our workers, the building’s occupants, and the community.

“Safety isn’t a requirement to check off. It’s the foundation of every project we build.”

This philosophy guides every operational decision — from the materials we select to the way we train our team.

Jobsite safety protocols

Our safety management system goes beyond minimum regulatory compliance. Every protocol is designed to eliminate risk at the source.

Pre-Task Hazard Analysis

Before any work begins, we perform a formal Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for each elevated or high-risk task, identifying hazards and establishing specific preventive controls.

Site-Specific Safety Plans

Every project has a documented Site-Specific Safety Plan reviewed and approved before mobilization. The plan covers access, work at height, material handling, and emergency protocols.

Daily Safety Inspections

Our supervisors perform safety inspections at the start of every shift, verifying PPE, scaffolds, tools, and work-area conditions before crews begin.

Incident Reporting & Investigation

Every incident and near-miss is reported, investigated, and documented. Root-cause analysis drives systemic improvements that prevent recurrence.

Regulatory compliance

We operate in full adherence to the federal, state, and local regulations that govern construction in the Carolinas. Compliance isn’t optional — it’s a non-negotiable condition of our operation.

All regulatory documentation is kept current and available to inspectors, general contractors, and owners at any point in the project.

OSHA 1926

Compliance with OSHA construction standards, including work at height, scaffolding, personal protective equipment, and silica exposure control.

OSHA 1910

Compliance with general industry safety standards for equipment maintenance and operation on site.

ANSI / ASSP Z359

National standard for fall protection systems: lifelines, harnesses, anchorage, and rescue procedures.

NC State Building Code

Full compliance with the North Carolina State Building Code and the IBC provisions governing masonry and exterior wall construction.

NFPA 70E

Electrical safety in the workplace for operations near energized systems on the facade and structure.

EPA / RCRA

Responsible environmental management of jobsite waste: mortar and masonry debris, sealants, coatings, and packaging materials.

Workforce training

Safety starts with knowledge. That’s why we invest systematically and continuously in the training of every person who works on our projects.

We don’t put anyone in the field without verifying current certifications. No schedule pressure justifies compromising the crew’s preparation.

Summa crew training and certification
01

OSHA 10 & OSHA 30 Hour

All field personnel complete OSHA 10-Hour Construction at minimum. Supervisors and senior technical staff hold OSHA 30-Hour certification, ensuring safety leadership at every level.

02

Work at Height & Fall Protection

Certification in fall protection systems — proper harness use, retractable lifelines, and anchorage per ANSI Z359 — including rescue procedure training.

03

Scaffold & Lift Operation

Task-specific training in scaffold erection, use, and inspection per OSHA 1926.451, plus certified operation of manlifts and scissor lifts.

04

Continuous Training & Toolbox Talks

Weekly toolbox talks on the specific work under way, complemented by periodic first-aid, emergency-response, and procedure-update training.

Quality control at every phase

Quality control isn’t a final review. It’s a process that runs parallel to the work, verifying each installed element before the next phase advances.

Material Inspection

We verify quality certificates, technical specifications, and physical condition of all materials before they go into the work — full traceability from manufacturer to installation.

Submittal & Shop Drawing Review

Submittals and shop drawings are reviewed before fabrication and installation — tolerances, connection details, and compatibility with the building structure are verified up front.

Field Inspection

Systematic in-progress inspection during installation — alignment, anchorage, flashing, reinforcing, and conformance with approved details on every wall section.

Verification & Closeout QC

Before closeout we complete final inspections and any specified field testing, and deliver a documentation package certifying the work conforms to the design and code requirements.

Insurance & licensing

We carry the coverage and hold the licenses required in North Carolina and the other states where we execute projects.

General Liability Insurance

Commercial general liability coverage carried on every project; certificate limits provided during prequalification.

Workers' Compensation

Workers' compensation coverage for all personnel per North Carolina and South Carolina requirements.

NC Unlimited GC License

Active North Carolina Unlimited General Contractor license — no dollar limit on projects we can contract in North Carolina.

Umbrella / Excess Liability

Additional umbrella coverage for larger projects, ensuring adequate protection for the owner and the general contractor.

Certificates of Insurance

ACORD 25 certificates issued for every project, with additional insureds per contract and owner requirements.

Performance & Payment Bonds

Bonding capacity for public and private projects that require performance and payment bonds.
